Local Server or Cloud? How to Choose for Your Company in Syria

When buying a new accounting or management system, the question comes up quickly: do we put it on a server in the office or in the cloud? The answer differs from one company to another, and this article gives you the criteria that settle it.

Is a local server or the cloud better for my company?

A local server fits better when the internet is unstable and most staff work in one office with good power protection. The cloud fits better when there are several branches or the team works remotely, the connection is acceptable and the service is available. Many Syrian companies benefit from a hybrid setup that combines the two.

When does a local server suit you?

The internet is the weakest link
If the connection drops often, work continues inside the office because devices reach the server over the internal network.
A team in one location
When everyone works in one building, there is less need for outside access.
Large files
Engineering drawings and video open far faster from a local server than over a slow internet connection.
Someone to run it
A server needs someone to update it, watch its backups and fix faults, in-house or through a support provider.
Power protection in place
If the office has solar power or batteries enough for the server and network, a large part of the risk of running locally disappears.

When does the cloud suit you?

Branches or field reps
The same data is available to the office, the warehouse and the rep in the field without complex setup.
An office without good power protection
If you cannot protect a server from outages and heat, it is better for it to run in a data centre.
No technical team
The provider handles server updates and physical security, while you remain responsible for accounts and permissions.
Fast growth
You can add users and storage without buying new hardware or waiting for it to arrive.
A partner or accountant outside the country
When a partner abroad or an external accountant needs to see the figures, the cloud makes this simpler and safer than opening up the office server.

The hybrid option

Local server with cloud backups
The team works on the server in the office, and an encrypted copy is sent to the cloud every day.
Cloud system with offline working
Points of sale or apps work locally during outages and sync data with the cloud when the connection returns.
Placing systems by their nature
Email and shared files in the cloud, and the heavy or sensitive system on an in-house server.
One authoritative source
In any hybrid setup, define clearly where the authoritative copy of the data lives, and how conflicts are resolved if the same record is edited in two places.

How to settle the decision step by step

  1. 01

    Record office conditions

Log power and internet outages for a few weeks. This is the most important input to the decision.

  2. 02

Count users and where they are

How many employees use the system, and how many are outside the main office or in other branches?

  3. 03

    Identify what cannot stop

Sales and invoicing, for example, cannot afford an hour of downtime, while monthly reports can wait.

  4. 04

    Compare the full cost

Add up hardware, power, maintenance and support against subscriptions over several years.

  5. 05

    Try before committing

Ask for a trial period or test version, and try it in your worst connection conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper in the long run?

It depends on the number of users, how long you use the system, and your power and maintenance costs. Calculate the full cost over several years for each option instead of comparing a purchase price with a monthly subscription.

Is a local server more secure?

Not automatically. A local server without updates, backups and physical protection can be weaker than a good cloud service. Security depends on management, not location.

Can we start locally and move to the cloud later?

Yes, if the system supports both options or lets you export all your data. Ask about this explicitly before buying.

What about the availability of cloud services in Syria?

Before committing, check that the service currently works from Syria, that paying for it is possible, and read the terms of use. Always keep a copy of your data outside the provider.
